What is the Consecration of a Church?
The Consecration of a church is the service of sanctification and solemn dedication of a building for use as a church. It is a special service which “changes” an ordinary building into the House of God. Like the Baptism of a child or the ordination of a priest, this change takes place through the Grace of God and the work of the Holy Spirit. The consecration of a church is a complex service that is filled with profound symbolism and many biblical elements and references. The Consecration is different from and usually takes place a while (sometimes years) after the blessing of the ground and the church’s formal opening for worship (Thryanoixia).
Join Father Luke for a 3-part lecture series on the Consecration
Last Thursday of each month at 6:30pm in the Kostas Hall
January 26: ‘What is Consecration & Why Do It?’
February 23: ‘The Three Saints: Saint Christopher, Saint Panteleimon & The Holy Martyrs of Saint Theodosios Monastery Palestine’
March 30: ‘After the Consecration… Then What?’
Donations Needed
A variety of ecclesiastical and practical items are needed for this rather complex event, many of which have been ordered from Greece because they come from specialty suppliers. Other locally available items must be prepared specially for the service here in our local area. A complete list of needed items can be found on the Consecration Donation Opportunities list. Please consider helping Saint Basil the Great Greek Orthodox Church community fulfill its long journey to completion by offering a gift of love to cover one or more of these items. These donations will be acknowledged in the Consecration Commemorative Album and at the Grand Banquet Fundraising Gala.
We are accepting donations for the following list of items required for Consecrating the Church.
Grand Banquet Fundraising Gala
We will be having a fundraising gala to raise money for the consecration weekend. Any extra money raised above our consecration weekend costs, will go to our Campus Beautification Fund. Table sales are now available and are listed on the Consecration Donations Opportunities list. Enjoy an evening celebrating our consecration with an open bar, seated dinner, and special entertainment by Power Station Entertainment – New York’s most exciting and elegant Greek American Band. Limited tickets are available for this exciting evening. Individual, non-reserved seating tickets will not be sold until February and will be very limited. The number of individual non-reserved seating tickets will be determined on the number of seats we have available after reserved tables have been sold. So, grab your friends and family and secure a reserved table now!
